MLK Day marks the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. which is observed on the third Monday of January each year. His actual birthday was January 15, 1929. He championed nonviolent action against racial discrimination from the 1950s until he was assassinated in 1968. The day was officially observed for the first time in every state in 2000.
