In the news: anonymous donation, National Night Out, back to school, new boat launch, old golf course.
At the Kaitlyn Mary Miller Memorial Golf Outing at the Swanhills golf course, Rockton Police Chief Matt Hollinger was presented with an anonymous $10,000 check in honor of Kaitlyn’s uncle, William Miller, who recently passed away. Hollinger says the donation will be used to "purchase new AEDs and outfit our officers’ medical go bags to continue our service to the community." An anonymous donor also gave $10,000 to PAWS Human Society in honor of Kaitlyn who loved animals and wanted to be a veterinarian.
School time! Classes begin again at Hononegah Community High School on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024. Freshman Orientation is scheduled for Friday, August 9 at 8:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fall semester begins for all students on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024.
As part of Roscoe's National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024, Roscoe Police and Harlem-Roscoe Fire will hold the 4th Annual National Night Out Classic Car, Truck & Bike Show at Fire Station #1 at 10544 Main St in Roscoe. Roscoe's Main Street will be closed starting at 4:30 p.m., from the Bridge Street intersection going north to the Kinnikinnick Creek bridge.
Richard Barnes, the owner of Red Barn Golf Course in Rockton, was a guest on the July 30, 2024 Course of Life podcast. The golf course dates back to the 1950s, one of the few remnants of the Wagon Wheel Resort.
The Rockton Parks & Rec Department said on August 1, "The new boat launch has finally arrived and is ready to install once Rock River levels recede a bit." The river levels were still about 8 feet in Rockton. The launch is on the other side of Hononegah Road and just east of Hononegah High School, across the river from Rockton Athletic Fields.
Hononegah school board president David Kurlinkus says, "In between rainstorms, the softball and baseball fields on the east end of the campus have undergone significant reconstruction. The softball field will finally be of regulation size and can host games and state playoff tournaments. Both the softball and baseball fields will have artificial turf when completed. We have had exterior work done on our on-campus storage buildings and reconstruction of some of our parking lots."
