Hononegah is turning the page to a new era in its cheer program, officially naming Kelsey Johnson as the next head cheer coach. The Hononegah Board of Education approved the hire Wednesday evening, and Johnson steps into the role with energy, experience, and a clear vision for the athletes she’ll be leading.

Johnson, 24, is a preschool teacher by day and a familiar face on the sidelines. She joined Hononegah just a year ago as the varsity assistant coach, helping guide the program through a memorable season—one highlighted by bringing home the NIC-10 championship, a moment she calls her favorite so far.

“One thing I value most in coaching is remaining truthful and honest with everyone around me,” Johnson said. “I am excited to return this year as head, and I hope to have a fun-filled football sideline season.”

As she settles into the role, Johnson is already preparing to meet the next wave of athletes. Hononegah has announced a series of open gym sessions, giving interested cheerleaders a chance to work skills, meet the new coach, and get a feel for the upcoming season.

All sessions will be held on the east end of the Fieldhouse, each running from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Thursday, June 18
  • Monday, June 22
  • Wednesday, June 24

Johnson will lead each session, offering what she describes as a safe, supportive environment where athletes can sharpen routines and build team chemistry. Tryout dates are still being finalized, but Johnson encourages anyone interested to attend open gyms and fill out the program’s interest form.
