John Cabello sworn in as State Representative for new 90th District
Cabello will represent Roscoe and Rockton in the Illinois House of Representatives.
UPDATE: Cabello has been appointed Assistant House Minority Leader, working with new House Minority Leader Leader Tony McCombie to "advocate for caucus positions on policy issues and build coalitions in support of legislation working its way through committee and on the House Floor." We have more analysis in coming days.
John Cabello has begun his term as State Representative for the new 90th District, which includes Rockton, Roscoe, and other portions of Winnebago, Stephenson and Boone Counties. Cabello took the oath of office on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2023 as a returning member of the Illinois House of Representatives at the inauguration of the 103rd General Assembly.
A Republican, Cabello previously represented the 68th District from 2012-2021. He was reelected three times before being defeated by Democrat David Vella in November 2020 - by the year's narrowest margin in Illinois, 239 votes. He returns to Springfield after a November election win against Roscoe Village President Mark Szula. After redistricting, the Stateline area was moved from the 69th District, represented by Joe Sosnowski, to the new 90th District.

Born in Texas but raised in Machesney Park, Cabello graduated from Harlem High School and played in the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps. After completing training at the police academy, Cabello began his nearly 30 year career as a police officer, first for South Beloit, then for Rockford, where he is now a police investigator.
Cabello declined the pay and benefits for previous elected positions, when he served as a Harlem Township trustee and Winnebago County Board member for District 8. As State Representative for the 68th District, he declined legislative pension benefits, a policy he will continue as a new member of the House. His salary and benefits with the Rockford Police Department totaled $146,756 in 2022.
“Northern Illinois taxpayers and job creators need more advocates fighting for lower taxes and common-sense in Springfield,” Cabello says. “20 years of one-party rule in the state legislature and four years under Governor JB Pritzker have resulted in higher taxes, more violent crime, and tens of thousands of families leaving Illinois every year. I am eager to get back to work for the new 90th District and give local taxpayers a strong voice in the Illinois House to offer positive, pro-taxpayer alternatives to the policies that keep driving jobs, opportunity and people out of state.”
When he represented the 68th District, Representative Cabello served on the Appropriations-Capital Committee, as the Republican Spokesperson on the Appropriations-Public Safety Committee, and as a member of the committees on Transportation, Labor & Commerce, and Judiciary – Criminal, respectively.
The House of Representatives for the new 103rd General Assembly includes 78 Democrats and 40 Republicans. Democrats hold a veto-proof majority in the Illinois General Assembly, and Gov. JB Pritziker is unlikely to veto many bills proposed by his fellow Democrats.
