Peter Powell had a long career as a writer and communications director

Peter Alvah Powell spent his working life as a reporter for the Elgin Courier News, director of communications for Judson College in Elgin, IL, and a writer/editor for Business News Publishing. He retired in 2016.

Peter passed away at his home in Roscoe, Illinois, February 9, 2024, at the age of 75.

Peter was born in Oneida, New York on February 9, 1949. He graduated from Wheaton High School in 1967 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland in 1971. Peter enjoyed being a member of Park Kiwanis in Loves Park, Illinois. He was a longtime missional partner at Redeemer Church Rockford.

Peter is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Sanda; son, Adam of Elgin; two sisters, Lisa Gossart of Alexandria, VA; Mary Meng of Rockville, MD; and brother, Tom of Leland, NC. 

Peter is predeceased by his daughter, Sarah; brother, Michael; and parents, Roland and Helen (MacDonald) Powell.

A celebration of life will be held at Redeemer Church, 5501 Windsor Rd., Loves Park, IL, on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11 a.m., preceded by a visitation at 10 a.m., with Pastor John Dirkse officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Redeemer Church, Rockford.
