South Beloit outlasts Hinckley-Big Rock 54-49 on Tuesday Night.

On Tuesday night, in a non-conference tussle, South Beloit outmuscled, out-executed, and outlasted a tough-minded, physical Hinckley-Big Rock squad.

Senior South Beloit Basketball Player Ross Robertson stated, “It was a great win for us over a great team.”

The opening tip went to South Beloit after a quick turnover. The Royals took a two-point lead after getting a bucket by senior Max Hintzsche. The remainder of the quarter went back and forth, with a late spurt by Hinckley-Big Rock giving them an 18-12 lead over South Beloit

The 2nd quarter saw the SOBOs get some good offense, with Ross Robertson being the lead guard, scoring six points in the quarter to go along with four assists and five rebounds. When the 2nd quarter buzzer went off, South Beloit had taken a six-point lead into halftime.

After a lovely performance by the dance/cheer squad of South Beloit, the Royals came back onto the floor with more energy, better defense,  and physicalness.  Allowing only seven points to the SOBOs. At the end of the 3rd quarter, we stood at 38 a piece.

Do you know anything about this South Beloit team over the last four years? The 4th quarter is “Big Boss” Ross Robertson time. As I was watching the game, I swear I had seen more than one Robertson on the floor. In the fourth, Ross scored nine of his 25 points. To control the paint and get it into the correct player's hands. Late in the 4th quarter, during a timeout, the SOBOs PA announcer suggested that if you wanted to get concessions, now would be the time, as it would be a tight one the rest of the way. He could not have been more correct. With just under two minutes remaining, South Beloit was ahead by a two-point margin, 47-45. The aggressiveness shown by Hinckley-Big Rock all game came back to bite them as South Beloit went into the bonus with 1:30 left on the 4th quarter clock; South Beloit got eight straight free throws to ice the game as they were able to limit the Royals to just a final 4 points and come away with a substantial non-conference victory 57-49.

South Beloit Head Coach Mike Miller talked about his team getting this win and that they could close the game out from the free line. “We work on it daily, discussing getting games into a free throw contest. Very proud that we could close it out from the free throw line.”

The next game for South Beloit is Thursday night at Galena 7 p.m. tipoff.
