Rockton Public Works employees, police, and fire recognized for taking measures to save a life

Four Public Works employees in the village of Rockton went above and beyond by taking measures to save someones life in mid-July.

On August 18 2026 Village President John Peterson recognized Luci Lilja, Christian Pesina, Keelan Andrews and Antonio Sanchez for working together with Rockton Police and Fire personnel to save the life of a female who had jumped off of the Rt. 75 bridge into the Rock River.

Peterson gave a report outlining the sequence of the incident. “Public works employees who were working in the area saw a person jump off the bridge into the Rock River.

Andrews, Lilja, and Pesina accessed the river from the boat dock since she was floating in that direction. They were able to yell and access the the water to aid in her rescue. They stayed with her until emergency help arrived.

Andrews also helped with directing traffic during that time.

In response to Peterson asking who called 911 and who pulled her out of the water it was determined that Pesina called 911. Lilja and Pesina assisted in getting her out of the water.

Peterson presented the Public Works employees with nicely framed certificates in appreciation.

Peterson followed by thanking all of the employees and complimented all four by saying, “Great job.”

Peterson additionally named Rockton Police Officers, Rockton Fire personnel and medical professionals who assisted with the incident.

Rockton Police who came to the scene were named: Officer Benjamin Heintz, Detective, Sergeant, Kiza Davies, Officer Emily Harrison, and Chief of Police Justin Jobst.

Rockton Fire who were recognized were: Deputy Chief Dan Ewers, Firefighter/PHRN Maggie Hoey, Firefighter/paramedic Mike Jahnke and Firefighter/EMT Savannah Laub.

After EMT’s arrived she was taken to a local hospital where she was treated by a doctor at a local hospital who was also named by Peterson.

Chief of Police Jobst expanded on comments made by Peterson. “It is very infrequent that we have the right people at the right time in a situation.”

Jobst stated that on July 17 at 12:44 p.m. we responded to a 911 call for a suicide attempt.

Jobst lauded “Luci, Christian, Keelan and Antonio . “I would like to personally thank you. You jumped into action bravely and unselfishly.”

Jobst presented Lilja, Pesina, Andrews and Sanchez with a Challenge Coin.

Jobst explained that a Challenge Coin is a small medallion or coin that symbolizes membership, achievement, or affiliation with a specific organization, often carrying the organizations insignia or emblem.

Loud and appreciative applause filled the room inside the Rockton Village Hall in the Municipal Center.

Public Works Director Dan Barber lauds these individuals, “I was very impressed with their quick and decisive action.”
