What to know about the Apr. 4 election

Tuesday's Consolidated Election gives the Stateline a chance to choose public servants: village trustees, city council members, and school board members, among others.

Elections are held in a polling place near you, open 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Apr. 4, 2023.

We have partial information on the Prairie Hill #133 School Board candidates:

The Harlem-Roscoe Fire Protection District is asking voters to approve a new tax for its pension fund. Taxes on a single family residence worth $100,000 would increase by 48 cents a year.  It would raise total taxes by $11,297, to $5,603,479.

Where to vote

For the Consolidated Election on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, polls will be open continuously from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

You can't pick and choose where to vote. Voters must vote at the polling place designated for the election precinct within which they reside. Many polling places serve more than one precinct - just walk up to the table that has your precinct number posted on it. What is your precinct number? It's printed on your voter registration card, or you can ask a poll worker to guide you to the right table.

Electioneering and campaigning is not allowed within 100 feet of a polling place. So if you're wearing your favorite candidate's hat or t-shirt that day, you have to take it off before you get anywhere near the door. It's polite to leave your favorite stuffed elephant or donkey at home. And two of our polling places, Didier Hall and Life Church, are completely campaign-free. Don't bother bringing your 100 foot tape measure there - campaigning isn't allowed anywhere on their property.

Say you're voting by mail without voting by mail

“To date, more than 4,500 Vote By Mail ballots have not been returned to our Election Department,” said Winnebago County Clerk Lori Gummow. “I strongly encourage residents who applied for these ballots to promptly submit them prior to the deadline to ensure their votes are counted.” She means that over half the mail-in ballots requested have not been sent in.

What if your mail-in ballot is still lying around the house? Well, you can't use it at your polling place. If you changed your mind and decided to vote in-person, you have to hand over your mail-in ballot to an election judge at your polling place. You will receive a new ballot.

If you want to vote by mail, you can still do that, even on Election Day. You can drop your mail-in ballot into any mailbox - but it has to be postmarked Apr. 4 or earlier. Or you can drive into Rockford and place your ballot in the secure drop box outside of the Winnebago County Administration Building, 404 Elm Street, Rockford, Illinois 61101. You have until 7 p.m. on Election Day (April 4) to do so. The Winnebago County Clerk’s Office has two weeks after Election Day to count them.
