James Hoover (1937-2022) coached at Hononegah, was principal at St. Peter's

James R. Hoover, age 84, of Rockton, IL, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, IL. He was born November 10, 1937 in Freeport, IL, the son of the late Marion and Ethel (Bloem) Hoover. Jim and Annette Mountjoy were married on June 25, 1966 and together raised three children.

He was a 1955 graduate of Dakota High School in Dakota, IL. He went on to receive his teaching degree at Illinois State Normal University and later his master’s degree from Bradley University in Peoria, IL. He also attended Northern Illinois University for his certification in administration. Jim began his teaching/coaching career at Deer Creek-Mackinaw Schools and then at Lincoln High School, Bradford High School, Dakota High School, and Hononegah High School. He retired and finished his career in education as principal at St. Peter’s Catholic School in South Beloit, IL. He was a member of the IBCA (Illinois Basketball Coaches’ Association).



Family always came first for Jim. He loved following his kids and grandkids in all of their sporting activities. He was lovingly known as “Bompy” not only to his grandkids but to the many families and communities that experienced his love and support. He also enjoyed golfing and playing bridge. He was an avid Chicago sports fan, cheering on the Cubs, Bears and Bulls. He was also a fan of the Fighting Illini and Notre Dame.

Jim is survived by the beloved mother of his children, Annette; children, Angie (Pat) Cleaver of Davis, IL, Jennifer (Ron) Henderson of Plainfield, IL, and Ryan (Brenna) Hoover of Lenexa, KS; grandchildren, Alexys (Craig) Doty, Mackenzie (Tyler) Schulze, Aleesha (Beau Rabedeaux) Cleaver, Jaycee Cleaver, Keegan (Allison) Motter, Lydia Hoover, Genevieve Hoover, and Moses Hoover; and great grandchildren: Braylon, Amery, Sienna and Calvin Doty; and Henry Schulze. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Larry Hoover.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dakota High School in Dakota, IL. There will be a visitation before the service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Guests are encouraged to wear their favorite sports apparel. A private interment will take place at the Davis Cemetery in Davis, IL. The Daughenbaugh Funeral Home of Dakota is assisting his family. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
