The Hononegah Community High School girls flag football team walked into Freeport on Wednesday night with a chance to secure a share of the NIC‑10 crown. They walked out as conference champions, standing shoulder‑to‑shoulder with Harlem atop the league after a gritty, disciplined 19–6 victory that showcased the depth, toughness, and late‑season maturity of a roster that has grown stronger every week.
This one felt like a title game from the opening whistle — and Hononegah answered every challenge.
Demke Leads the Charge Again
Quarterback Layla Demke delivered another signature performance, controlling the pace and punishing Freeport with both her arm and her legs. She finished 10‑of‑17 passing for 151 yards, a touchdown, and a one‑point conversion, while adding 98 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Demke’s poise continues to define Hononegah’s offense. When Freeport tightened coverage, she ran. When they crept up, she threw darts.
