All it takes to play a song is being able to count the strings or holes.

Listen to a few of the popular songs from that time period from composers Stephen Foster and Old Dan Emmet.

Instruments that you can try include:

  • Psaltry – an instrument that uses a bow
  • Dulcimer – a strummed instrument
  • Lap harp – a plucked instrument
  • Gourd rattle – for rhythm
  • Drum – for rhythm
  • Recorder – a wind instrument
