RV fire quickly put out - without hydrants but not without damage

When a 42-foot recreational vehicle caught fire alongside a brick garage in Roscoe Township, there were no nearby fire hydrants. So the Harlem-Roscoe Fire Department quickly sent a MABAS Box Alarm to nearby fire departments, including Rockton and Loves Park, to bring tenders to carry in water. The residence is on Montclair Road, near Hononegah Road between Dorr Road and McCurry Road.

Harlem-Roscoe Fire Chief Don Shoevlin reports they received the call at about 6:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8. By the time they arrived, fire had fully engulfed the RV and was spreading into the garage. Nevertheless, fire personnel put out the fire rapidly.  The RV could not be saved and the garage and a bedroom were damaged. The fire was so hot, it even damaged a neighbor's siding.  An ambulance was on the scene, but Chief Shoevlin says, "There were no injuries and the fire is still under investigation." A white Bobcat was used to clean up the debris afterwards.

When the fire units arrived, the residents were already standing outside with three of their pets. A fourth pet was rescued by firefighters.
