- Located within Colored Sands Forest Preserve northwest of Shirland, Illinois, Sand Bluff Bird Observatory is one of the largest small-bird banding operations in the country that is open to the public. In a typical year, the all-volunteer team will band up to 6,000 warblers, vireos, orioles, sparrows, thrushes, finches, and others. Their research is conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s BBL. The next banding session is scheduled for Thursday.
