- Beginning January 1, the Village of Roscoe is expected to lose $100,000 a year in grocery tax revenue. According to Alex Merry of the Beloit Daily News, Roscoe and Cherry Valley are the only municipalities that had not passed their own grocery tax ordinances by October 1. A 2024 Illinois law meant the state would stop collecting the tax for local governments. In a June 3 memo [PDF], Village Administrator Josef Kurlinkus warned trustees about the October 1, 2025 deadline, but said they could vote by next April or October to reinstate the tax on July or January 1, 2026. Currently about 17% of the Village’s revenue comes from the tax, including from purchases at Schnuck’s. Despite having a Roscoe address, Walmart is in Rockton and brings in hundreds of thousands in grocery tax revenue there.
