Hononegah mascot, teen writers, South Beloit library

Rockton-Roscoe News: Monday, April 14, 2025
House Bill 1237 would require Hononegah to remove the Indian logo when the Fieldhouse is replaced, decades from now, and require new team uniforms after 2030.

Monday's news from Roscoe, Rockton, and South Beloit - only from Rockton-Roscoe News.

  • State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) says that a bill that would prohibit Hononegah from using a Native mascot or team name is "terrible legislation that would tear apart generations of community pride in school districts." Agreeing with State Representative John Cabello, Chesney says the wording of House Bill 1237, which passed the Illinois House on Thursday, is, "more about woke ideology and political theater than honest, well-intentioned policymaking... School leaders can rest assured that I will do everything in my power to derail this bill in the Senate.” So far, it hasn't been introduced in the Senate. The House bill would require Hononegah to remove the Indian logo when the Fieldhouse is replaced, decades from now, but gives the school board until 2026 to vote to change the team name and until 2030 to remove it from team uniforms.
