In the news in Rockton, South Beloit and Roscoe: basketball, ice rink, scholarships, and the Salvation Army
Hononegah girls basketball won 39-26 on Dec. 28, 2023 against Lake Park. The top scorers were Ally Niedfeldt with 12 points, Jordan Dimke with 11 points, and Jordan Johnston with 9 points.
A record 134 families in Rockton, Roscoe, Shirland, South Beloit and Harrison received gifts this year through the Rockton Lions Club's Wimpy's Fund. Volunteers packed boxes and made deliveries on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2023.
Rockton Police officer Penny Cure has retired after 20 years of dedicated service to the community. She was the familiar school resource officer at Hononegah High School.

We asked Donald Self, Director of Parks & Recreation for the Village of Rockton, if the ice rink off Hononegah Road will be open this year. He replied, "Weather permitting, yes. We do not operate it but I work with the volunteer group that does." Last time it didn't get cold enough, long enough, until February.
You may have noticed the bell ringer at Schnucks in Roscoe, but in addition to the donations you dropped into the red kettle, the Salvation Army received another $230,000 from shoppers (and Schnuck's) through the store's Round Up at the Register program.
Several local students received scholarships through the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Foundation for the 2023-24 academic year. Ella Dennison of Rockton, who is studying biology, won the Frances J. Rehrauer Women in Medicine and Sciences Scholarship. Noah Brockway of South Beloit, who is studying music, won the Gala Concert Scholarship. Two South Beloit students were named Chancellor Scholars: Benjamin Fisher, who is studying mathematics, and Guinivere Hausser, who is studying management.
