As we celebrate Independence Day, many of us will gather for fireworks, parades, and backyard barbecues. We'll reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and the history that shaped our nation.

But as we celebrate America's 250th birthday, I find myself thinking about a different question: What does patriotism look like in our everyday lives?

Not just on holidays. Not just when it's easy.

We live in a time when division often feels louder than connection. Disagreements can quickly become personal. People are craving more understanding, respect, and humanity.

That's why I believe one of the most patriotic things we can do is choose kindness.

Not because kindness is soft. Quite the opposite. Kindness requires patience when we're frustrated, compassion when someone is struggling, and respect when we disagree. It asks us to see the humanity in one another, even when we don't see eye to eye.

Strong communities are not built through perfect agreement. They're built through relationships, trust, and a willingness to care about people beyond ourselves.

As we celebrate our nation's independence, perhaps we can also celebrate our interdependence. The small acts of kindness we choose each day strengthen our neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and communities.

The future of America won't be shaped only by policy or politics. It will also be shaped by how we treat one another.
