Hononegah is 2-0 after a 28-12 victory over Jefferson on Friday night in NIC 10 football action.
The new Kelsey Field was unveiled for NIC-10 conference football play on Friday night. When the game ended, Hononegah had a 28-12 victory over the now 1-1 Jefferson J-Hawks.
"Two and oh is where you want to be", said Head Coach Brian Zimmerman.
Senior running back Tyler Banker ran for a team-high 156 yards and scored 3 TDs in helping Hononegah gain 285 yards on the ground as a team in the 28-12 win. Tyler Banker said, "he knew he would need to step up and run the ball". The final ground stats were 42 rushes from 10 different Indian rushers for 285 yards, with 4 touchdowns and an average rush of 6.8 yards.
The Hononegah defense allowed just 249 total yards in the week 2 game against Jefferson. The defense was led by senior Keegan Vancil again as he added three sacks and now has five sacks in 2 games on the season, as he had two in last week's 27-15 win over Auburn. The defense again got extra possessions for the offense as they forced two fumbles, and senior Alex Peterson got an interception and then immediately grabbed the turnover flag behind the bench and celebrated with the student section. The Legion of Doom Indian defense is causing fits for the early-season opponents, having allowed just over 500 total yards in the 2-0 start to the season.
This week's game was an introduction for future Hononegah Indians to Kelsey Field as the RRL Junior Indians football coaches, players, and cheerleaders got the chance to hear the roar of a Friday night at Kelsey Field. Hundreds of kids, coaches, and parents walked the track between the Sophomore and Varsity football games.
