Hononegah vs. Harlem: 38-14

The Hononegah Indians beat the Harlem Huskies 38-14 on Sept. 13, 2024. Hono came out and set the tone early with hardnosed old school-style football of a great running game and great defense.

The Indians led 12-0 after one quarter, 25-13 at the half, and shut out Harlem in the second half to claim the victory comfortably 38-14. In every measure or stat, Hononegah overwhelmed the Huskies of Harlem. One stat that sheds light on the dominance Friday night was that the Indians had 23 first downs to Harlem getting just 9. Being able to get a total of 472 yards for the offense while allowing just 177 was a huge factor in keeping Harlem off the field.

On defense, the Indians were able to hold all-conference senior running back Jahmani Muhammad to just 51 yards on the ground. The outstanding player still had a 71-yard catch and run for a TD but was held well below his normal production and forced Harlem to change their game plan which played right into Hono's hands.

Hononegah threw the ball just eight times as senior QB Dominic Kelly finished 5-8 35 yards. On the ground he had seven rushes for 64 yards with a long of 27 to go along with one TD. Curt Smith again led the team in rushing with 14 rushes for 230 yards* with a long of 49 yards and scored three TDS. Another outstanding performance was put in by Brock Anderson who had seven rushes for 114 yards with a long of 44 and scored two times. All six Hononegah touchdowns were scored on the ground but one bright spot in the passing game was senior tight end Cole Schmall grabbing two balls and gaining 41 yards with a long of 21 yards.

Next up for the Indians is 2-1 Guilford who is coming off a 47-0 win against Rockford Auburn.

Thanks to the Hononegah stats team for providing me with the game stats.

Special thanks goes out to Harlem Head Coach Jim Morrow and the Huskies football program for providing food after the game to the Hononegah Indians.

*After reviewing the game film Curt Smith had his rushing total updated correctly and officially to 14 rushes and 230 yards. Not the 13 rushes and 179 yards as previously stated. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
