The first tract of 40 acres was acquired by Natural Land Institute in 2018 and the other 347-acre tract was purchased in 2021 with grants from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation and funds from other donors.

The open house, parking areas, establishment of trails, and signs are supported by a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation.
