Joan Meller was an active member of the Rockton community. She was a member of the Rockton American Legion Auxiliary, a volunteer at the Talcott Library, and a member of the Blue Bird group (an organization that helped raise money for Fair Oaks Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in South Beloit, IL). She was an avid reader, a homemaker and spent many hours crocheting, knitting, and sewing. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.

Joan passed away Jan. 6, 2023. Burial services were held January 12, 2023, at McCorkle Funeral Home – Rockton Chapel. Burial took place at Rockton Township Cemetery.



Joan was born on November 8, 1933 in Fort Lupton, CO, the daughter of Florence (Kirk) Hunter and Richard Hunter. She moved to Rockford, IL with her mother and sister when she was in elementary school, and then to Rockton, IL. She graduated from Hononegah High School in 1951. Joan married David Meller on February 12, 1955 and that same year they built their home on South Bluff Road in Rockton where they raised their family.

She is survived by her son Robert (Valerie) Meller of Janesville, WI; daughter Kathleen (Brian) Stuempges of La Crosse, WI; granddaughters Amanda (Jason) Stengel of Edgerton, WI; Meagan (Jeff) Stroud of Redmond, WA; Kory Stuempges of La Crosse, WI and grandson Joel (Alexis) Meller of Haslett, MI; great grandchildren Ethan Stengel, Alexis Stengel and Aubriana Craig; sister Glenna Gleasman; brother Alan Steiner, sister-in-law Donna Meller and several nieces and nephews.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, stepfather Al Steiner, husband Dave, and brothers-in-law William Meller and LeRoy Gleasman.
