Five of the 20 teachers who are finalists in the 2025 Golden Apple Award for Academic Excellence teach at schools in far northern Winnebago County.

Betsy Dhom is a Special Education – Resource teacher at Stone Creek Elementary School in Roscoe. She provides individualized education plans for second and third grade students.

She is one of twenty teachers who are finalists for the 2025 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching. Among the finalists this year, five are from the Kinnikinnick and Prairie Hill School Districts.

Betsy was also a finalist in the 2014 Golden Apple Foundation awards.

Betsy graduated from Rockford University. She is currently continuing her education through the American College of Education Master’s Program, studying Curriculum and Instruction.

She taught Life Skills at Roscoe Middle School before coming to Stone Creek School seven years ago.

“I love what I do. Every student and every day is different. I love getting inside their heads.”

She said students like the small group environment in her classroom. “I usually have eight or nine children at a time.”

As a resource teacher, she knows the value of connecting with the students before anything else. “It’s important to know what frustrates them.” Betsy currently lives in South Beloit, Illinois.
