Harlem-Roscoe firefighters arrived at the intersection of Love Rd. and McCurry Rd. shortly after 12:05 p.m, Dec. 19, 2022. Two vehicles were in the ditch. The gray GMC Yukon SLT had run into a pole. The red Mazda was facing toward it on the other side of the pole.

A Harlem-Roscoe ambulance took one driver to the hospital.

The intersection has been the scene of several previous collisions and government officials say they are investigating ways to make it safer. Some residents are asking for a 4-way stop.

Winnebago County Engineer Carlos Molina, a Roscoe resident, told us in September, "Any changes to the intersection, including a 4-way stop, would have to be after an engineering study. A 4-way condition is only recommended if it meets the warrants, as set by the MUTCD...."

Molina explained that the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic ControlDdevices) is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the American Traffic Services Safety Association (ATSSA). It is also used by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT).

Molina said, "We will also conduct a speed study to see if a lower posted speed is warranted. After we conduct the studies, we will make recommendations and take action." Molina added that if a 4-way stop turns out to be necessary, the County does have the money in its budget to put one in. We have contacted Molina for an update on his studies.
