VFW Post 2955 in Roscoe are winners of 2022 Buddy Poppy competition
Both entries will be in the national competition on July 18 in Kansas City, MO.
Veterans and auxiliary members of Roscoe VFW Post 2955, came home winners in the Illinois State Buddy Poppy competition in Springfield, IL, again this year.
After a district win in Rochelle, the teams went on the state competition in Springfield, IL.
Auxiliary members worked tirelessly to create their memorable art display featuring an elderly veteran standing among a field of crosses. Cathy Suchoski led the way in completing the display using over 3,000 poppies. The design earned second place in Category III, Division C.
Bill Graves and Rubin Hernandez worked many hours on the Veterans Post 2955 creation “The Cost of Freedom” featuring a field of white crosses on a red background. Approximately 1,000 poppies were used in the design. The veterans competed in Division B, category III.
Roscoe Post 2955 has entered the contest for many years and have done well.
Last year, the auxiliary won first place in the state competition held in Springfield, IL, which qualified them for the national contest in Kansas City, MO. Unfortunately, the competition was cancelled due to COVID.
This year both the vets and auxiliary will be heading back to the national competition in Kansas City, July 18, 2022, hoping for another win.
The poppy, a symbol of sacrifices in combat does back to Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a poet, a soldier and a physician, who fought in Belgium during World War I. McCrae wrote the poem “In Flanders Field.” The poem describes the bright red poppies which grew on the graves of the soldiers who shed their blood and lost their lives on the field of battle.
Roscoe VFW Post 2955 auxiliary won second place for their poppy display. The yearly competition was held in Springfield, IL and qualifies them for the national competition to be held July 18, in Kansas City, MO. The display features an elderly veteran in a poppy field of white crosses.
