Quilts of Valor came into being in 2003 when Catherine Roberts, a quilter, began stitching a quilt for her son when he was deployed to Iraq.

Since 2004, over 299,246 quilts have been awarded. The mission is to honor service members and veterans who have been touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

Suchoski read the names of five young area veterans: “Four of them played army in my backyard,” she said.  “They went to war and came back veterans.”

As their names were called, each veteran came forward and was wrapped in a quilt.

A previous version of this story sometimes used the term "Quilt of Honor" instead of "Quilt of Valor." Quilts of Honor is the trademark of a different organization. We regret the error.
