Girls basketball: Hononegah 45, Guilford 33 was "best game by far"
The Hononegah Lady Indians outscored the Guilford Lady Vikings on Tuesday Dec 10, 2024.
Coming into the contest on Tuesday night, Dec 10, 2024, not a single player in the program and nobody on the varsity team has felt the sting of a NIC -10 conference loss. They had won fifty-eight games in a row and counting. After Tuesday's huge early season contest over the Guilford Vikings, the streak has gone to fifty-nine games after the 45-33 win.
With the 12-point win, the Lady Indians improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
Junior Jordan Dimke led the way with 18 points and had a ton of help from freshman point guard Carly Koch, who had timely points and assists to teammates junior Kylie Simpson and fellow freshman Ainsley Hughes.
The turning point in the game came at the end of the 3rd quarter when the Lady Indians scored 10 straight points on five straight possessions. Steals, jumpers, free throws, and great man-to-man defense helped the Indians to take a 38-27 lead into the 4th quarter.
The Lady Indians are a young and hungry team that should continue to grow in confidence. Speaking with head coach Jason Brunke after the game, he mentioned that “tonight was the best game we have had by far.”
Coach Brunke spoke of how much the ladies have taken to the coaching and team environment this season. He’s excited to see where this team can get to, as they do not have one senior on the team. It's a long season, and they have a tough conference schedule coming up, but it was a great early-season victory, one they should build off of to continue one of the most dominant stretches in NIC-10 conference girls basketball history.
Hononegah's next game is Friday night, Dec. 13, 2024, when they play host to Freeport. The varsity tip is set for 7:15. Arrive early to watch an undefeated JV team tip, which is set for 5:30 p.m. from the fieldhouse.
