Strong spirits: who, me?
In confessing to each other, the love and mercy of God show up most clearly.
Most of us are familiar with the topic of forgiveness. But what do we know about confession? What is it, and why do we need it?
Confession is admitting our need, our brokenness, our sin. It is difficult because it reveals our weakness. But it is also the one essential we all need for healing, forgiveness, and restoration.
Not surprisingly, the Bible tells us we need to confess to God - to admit our sins and ask for forgiveness. More surprising, it also tells us to confess to each other. It is in confessing to each other that the love and mercy of God show up most clearly, and we know we are free.
"Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." the apostle James (James 5:16)
"I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.' And you forgave the guilt of my sin" David the king (Psalm 32:5)
"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." John the apostle (1 John 1:9)
We all mess up. We all need to confess. Neglecting this seriously limits the freedom, joy, and power that God intends for us. Please take advantage of this great gift!
