Strong spirits: bearing fruit
Why does a farmer sow seed in his fields? To have a rich harvest! Why does God sow the seed of his good news in our hearts? Same answer!
First, God offers us a relationship with himself so that we can have an abundant life in this world and the promise of eternal life in the world to come. But that's not all. He also invites us into the work of helping others receive this life. We are told that "God desires all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth." (1 Timothy 2:4). For that to happen, all the followers of Jesus need to be on the team, sharing the good news with those around them.
How can we do this? By remaining in him. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me, and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." (John 15:5). What fruit? First of all, the fruit of becoming like Jesus (loving, joyful, peaceful, etc.) Secondly, the fruit of others’ changed lives, as they see Jesus in us, and come to want what we have.
It is no odious task we are called to, but the wonderful privilege of abiding in Jesus, with the result that others too experience him and become his.
Are you bearing fruit? Do you want this fruit?
