Stout Hononegah defense led the way to open the 2023 IHSA football season
Hononegah doing Hononegah things again: defense led the way to a convincing 55-8 over Jefferson.
Rockton, IL - Hononegah did what Hononegah does. They came out and set the tone for the game and season early. Led by an angry fired-up aggressive defense, Hono smothered Jefferson to open the 2023 IHSA football season on Friday, Aug. 25, 2023.
The Indians scored through the air, on the ground, and via special teams. Starting QB Cole Warren threw for 2 touchdowns, both going to Northern Iowa commit Isiah Houi who also had a 25-yard rushing TD. The offense was able to average 6.5 yards per rush against Jefferson. The Hononegah Indians totaled just under 200 yards on the ground against the Jefferson J-hawks.
The stout defense for Hononegah allowed under 60 yards total for Jefferson. The defense came up big in the turnover game as well causing the J-Hawks to cough it up three times.
Friday’s game was the first in the NIC-10 conference schedule for the Hononegah Indians. The next game is a tussle with Harlem who survived against Auburn 12-6. Kickoff is 7:15 p.m. on Friday September 1 at Kelsey Field. Arrive early and bring your voices to cheer on Hononegah.
