For the first time in nearly 40 years, the South Beloit Public Library is getting a floor-to-ceiling makeover. On January 12, 2026, the Library Board greenlit a $526,500 bid from Scandroli to modernize the facility, marking the end of a decades-long wait for interior improvements.

The road to renovation hasn't been short. After a 2018 referendum for a new combined City Hall and Library building failed, the board pivoted to investing in their current home. Following critical structural fixes—including a new roof and HVAC system in 2022—the focus has finally shifted to the patron experience.

"Frequently, we would hear from patrons that the library hasn’t changed at all since they were kids," said Director Brenda Weinberg in the library's press release. "With the renovation, we will retain the small familiar hometown feel, while creating a fresh and inviting atmosphere."

The library hasn't seen a significant interior update since 1988. This project, designed by Angus-Young Associates, aims to fix that with a heavy emphasis on accessibility and community needs.

Key upgrades include:

  • Expanded Children’s Area: Featuring mobile "shorter bookshelves" on castors to accommodate visiting preschool classes.
  • Modern Amenities: A cozy sitting area with an electric fireplace, a redesigned lobby, and a revamped programming room.
  • Efficiency & Access: LED lighting, acoustic ceiling tiles, and a fully accessible circulation desk and water fountain.
  • Fresh Look: New furniture, shelving, and updated restrooms throughout.

In a win for local taxpayers, the project is being funded entirely through accumulated reserves. The board credited the "foresight and fiscal responsibility" of past directors and boards for making the $526,500 investment possible without new debt.

Construction is expected to begin shortly, with a goal of completion by June 1, 2026.

While the library plans to stay open as much as possible, Weinberg noted that brief closures may be necessary while the the library is planning to maintain services and programs to the fullest extent possible during the process.
