Shirland Math Team to publish children's book on Pi Day
Proceeds from the sale of "The Pi Day Pirates" will benefit St. Jude's Research Hospital.

Press Release from Shirland School District
The Shirland Math team, composed of a group of ten students from 6th through 8th grade, started out the school year brainstorming ideas to meet the requirements for gold level club set forth by MathCounts National Math Club. The ideas snowballed into a now published children's math-magical book, written and illustrated by Shirland's Math Team, in which all proceeds from the book will be donated to St. Jude's Research Hospital. The ten members of the team got hands-on experience on writing, editing, illustrating, publishing, and marketing their book. Their hands-on marketing ideas even led to making a pitch to the Ice Hogs! Which eventually led to the Ice Hogs letting them come to the game on March 14th to promote their book.
The book, The Pi Day Pirates: A Math-Magical Adventure for Savvy Scallywags, is a math-magical children's adventure that has entertaining jokes, puns, and of course math problems. The students worked hard to incorporate math concepts with storytelling concepts.
The book will be able to be purchased on Amazon on March 14, 2025, or Pi Day, so others (teachers, STEM enthusiasts, parents, children, and all others) can enjoy this math-magical adventure!
To celebrate the release of their book, and to excite younger students about math, Shirland’s math team is not just stopping at writing a book but holding a Pi-Day Celebration. The celebration will include grade level activities run by members of the math team and reading the Pi-Day Pirates to the K-5 classes during their math times. Free copies of the Pi Day Pirates book will be distributed to families at the end of the day to encourage literacy and continued excitement of math at home.
