Saturday night basketball showcase sees the South Beloit SOBOs win 64-50
It was cold outside but the boys basketball was heating up inside the South Beloit High School.
The South Beloit SOBOs boys basketball team came out on top 64-50 in the 16th Annual Martin Luther King Day Tournament Saturday night showcase game against the Durand Bulldogs.
The SOBOs were led by juniors Ross Robertson’s 33 points, and Trudane Peterson’s 23 points including five 3-pointers. The game was close after the first quarter with South Beloit leading 13-10. The lead was just three at halftime 28-25 as the Durand Bulldogs mounted an aggressive style of play in the quarter committing double-digit fouls which seemed to get South Beloit out of their offensive rhythm. In the third quarter, South Beloit was able to push the lead back to ten because, as assistant coach Mike Miller said, “We were able to match the energy that Durand brought in the first half.” In the fourth quarter, South Beloit was able to get better shots and looks at the basket which allowed them to push the lead out to the final margin of fifteen. With the win, the SOBOs improved to 11-4 on the season.
Due to the extreme cold and travel concerns for other schools, the Monday portion (1/15) of the South Beloit MLK Basketball Tournament has been canceled.
The SOBOs were scheduled to be back in action at the South Beloit 16th Annual Martin Luther King Day Tournament on Monday at 3 p.m. taking on Stillman Valley in the tournament semifinals. With a victory in that game, South Beloit would have taken on the winner between North Boone and Forreston Monday night from the South Beloit High School Gym.
With his 33 points in the game, Ross Robertson moved to 2nd place on the all-time scoring list for South Beloit High School, sitting just behind all-time leading scorer Peter Scalia.
- Peter Scalia 1,831
- Ross Robertson 1,680
- Perry Range 1,677
Durand was led by Nathan Folk with 23 points. He had six 3-pointers in the game. The loss drops the Bulldogs to 13-4 on the season.
