While cleaning out a vacant storage area on Thursday, March 20, 2025, a man found a hand grenade. He didn't know if the grenade was live. He wasn't in the Village of Roscoe, but elsewhere in Winnebago County, but he decided to turn it over to the authorities at the Roscoe Police Department, According to a police news release, once the man arrived at the police station shortly after 6:30 p.m., police officers began "using extreme caution as the grenade appeared old and fragile." What if it went off?

Roscoe police called in the Winnebago County bomb squad, who found that the hand grenade was "deconstructed and not a threat to the public." While the bomb squad was working, police blocked off Main Street from Bridge Street to Firehouse Pub - the area in front of the Police Department - "to create a safe zone" and advised nearby neighbors to stay inside. Sgt. Robert Lewis says they didn't close Firehouse Pub but it was made clear to patrons "you're not coming any further south." The Roscoe Police Department thanks the downtown residents for their patience during the investigation.
