Bicycles have been around almost forever.  Starting with children’s tricycles and on through all makes and models of bikes including motorbikes mountain, racing, and commuter bikes, hybrid, unicycles and the latest trend: E-bikes.

E-bikes have come a long way.  At first, they were a novelty, now they are a safe and practical form of transportation. Pedaling is much easier for the average biker. There is more control and faster speeds.

E-bikes are powered by a battery and electric motor. With a top speed of 25 mph, there is no need for a special license to operate. A single charge can carry you 30 miles.

Rock Cut E-Bikes is about 30 miles west of the Harvard Metra station, so you could theoretically ride from the Roscoe store to Chicago.

Todd Henning and his wife, Ann are owners of two Rock Cut E-bikes stores.  He said the response to electric bikes has been great.

“The trails are beautiful around Rockford, Roscoe and Rockton.  Segways weren’t practical for the hills and trails around here.”

The couple are also owners of Rockford Quality Grinding, 3160 Forest View Road, in Rockford. Five years ago, they opened the first Rock Cut E-bikes, right next door to the grinding company. The venture was quite successful, prompting them to open the second Rock Cut bike store located at 5063 Edgemere Ct. in Roscoe, about a year ago.

“Ann and I received a stimulus check during COVID. We decided to use the money to open the store in Roscoe.”

“Our 17 year old son Carson is autistic and works with us in the Roscoe store. Carson is the   reason we decided to do this.  I wanted us to do something together. He is learning how to run the business. He’s my partner.”

E-bike rentals will be handled by Carson, at the Roscoe location. “He is a good tour guide and a good  actor.  Carson interacts well with people.”

Both locations carry a large number of E-bike brands, including Bintelli and Eunorau.

Henning services the bikes he sells.  The store also carries accessories such as phone holders, water bottles and helmets.

Rentals are available as of June 2, 2023.

  • One-hour rentals are $35.00 per rider.
  • $30.00 per person- four riders.
  • $25.00 per person – six riders
  • $80.00 for all-day rentals

The E-bikes sell for around $2,000. Interested bikers can come in and try them out.

Carson might even be persuaded to demonstrate his electric unicycle abilities.
