National headlines often drown out the local heartbeat, our Winnebago County is taking a moment to honor the people who keep our elections running smoothly—not the candidates, not the campaigns, but the neighbors who show up before dawn, unlock the doors, power up the machines, and greet every voter with a simple, steady confidence.

On August 11, the Winnebago County Clerk’s Office will join election officials across the country in celebrating Poll Workers Helping Americans Vote Day, a national initiative led by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission. As recently released press release stated, the effort “shines a spotlight on the individuals who ensure elections are conducted fairly, securely, and efficiently.”

These election judges—hundreds of them across our Winnebago County—are the unsung guardians of the election process. They verify registrations, issue ballots, operate voting equipment, and make sure every eligible voter has the chance to cast a ballot with confidence. Winnebago County Clerk Lori Gummow puts it plainly: “Their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to public service are the foundation of every successful election.”

Remember to tell them you “Saw it in the Rockton-Roscoe News.”

With the November General Election approaching, the county needs more than 500 election judges to staff polling places. It’s meaningful work, paid work, and work that directly strengthens the integrity of our elections. Training is provided, and applications are available through the Clerk’s Office or by calling the Election Department.

The EAC created this national recognition day to encourage more Americans to step forward. Because democracy doesn’t run on slogans—it runs on people willing to serve their community for one very important day.

In Winnebago County, those people deserve our thanks.
