In the news: talent on video, Street Market, village board meetings, pioneer women
May 31 is the deadline to submit a 2 1/2 minute video (or shorter) for the 815 Rising Stars virtual talent show, sponsored by the Golden Apple Foundation. Talents could include singing, dancing, playing an instrument, performing magical illusions, acting, and even drawing (but not lip syncing). Voting begins July 15 – July 23 for the top 20 entrants. Last year's finalists included Hononegah's one man band Max Zubic and the Minimal band.
Life Church's Street Market Extravaganza this Saturday May 21, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. will have all sorts of vendors, retro toys, food trucks, inflatables for the kids and a DJ to kick off the summer season. Vendors can register a spot for $25 or two for $40 (whether you’re a business owner or just want to clean out your basement). Limit 2 spots per person. All proceeds will be going to the church's kids ministry.
Local Government
At Tuesday's board meeting, the Village of Roscoe is expected to approve Schroeder Asphalt Services to provide its 2022 Class D pavement patching. The Village has appropriated $50,000 for the program. They will also hold a final vote to lease three new police vehicles from Enterprise Fleet Management Inc., costing a total of $155,198, and to approve a updated whistleblower protection policy.
Also, during Tuesday night's meeting, the Rockton Village Board will hold a public hearing on whether to pre-annex 14111 Hansberry Rd. and to rezone it from Agricultural to Urban Transitional. On Thursday, May 19, the Village will hold a special meeting, also open to the public, to discuss the 2022-2023 budget.
This week, we report on the race for Winnebago County Clerk, where incumbent Republican Lori Gummow will face Republican challenger Michael Delgado. Both candidates plan to tell us why they should serve in this position.
Local History
In May, the Roscoe Township Historical Society Facebook page is highlighting four of our early pioneer women. A 1838 letter tells the struggles of one family who eventually did very well for themselves, along with brief stories of an artist, a postmistress, and a tax collector. Last month they focused on Roscoe's church history, with abolitionist pastor Theron Loomis, Congregational pastor Quincy Dowd, one of the founders of Fall Festival, and circuit-riding Methodist preacher Samuel Pillsbury.
College News
Marissa Floryance of Rockton, who is graduating from St. Norbert College's ROTC program, will be commissioned on May 28 as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. Her first assignment will be at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, in the Military Police Corps.
Andrew Hallstrom of Roscoe presented "The Effect of Microgravity on the Life Cycle of Temperate Bacteriophages" and "Characterization of Johnathan's Phams" at Carthage College's annual Celebration of Scholars event on May 7-8. Celebration of Scholars is a poster exhibition that features original research, scholarship, and creative work completed by Carthage students.
Parker Hearne, a native of Roscoe and graduate of Hononegah High School, helped the 2021-22 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team to secure a conference championship against The College of New Jersey. But on May 15, the team lost its regional round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship against Case Western Reserve University. Hearne, a senior at UW-Whitewater, is majoring in mathematics.
