In the news: farewell to Jamie Evans, Golden Apple Awards, municipal meetings, barbecue coming
Visitation for former Roscoe Police Chief Jamie Evans will be from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Roscoe United Methodist Church, 10816 Main Street, Roscoe, IL. A funeral service at the church is at 1 p.m., Monday, December 18. A police escort will follow from the church to Honquest Family Funeral Home - Mulford Chapel, 4311 North Mulford, Loves Park, IL.
The Golden Apple Foundation has announced Alex Hartz, who teaches algebra and calculus at Hononegah Community High School, as a finalist in the 2024 Golden Apple Teacher Awards, including Twenty talented 6th-12th grade teachers in Winnebago and Boone County were chosen from "a large group of very worthy nominees" by a committee of community volunteers.
The South Beloit City Council will hold its regular meeting on Monday, Dec. 18, 2023. The villages of Roscoe and Rockton will meet on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023. Meetings are open to the public.

Last fall you may have noticed (or smelled) the Whiskey Hotel Barbecue food truck and smoker in front of Schnuck's. According to the Rock River Current, pitmaster Will Hendrickson hopes to open his first restaurant this spring at Roscoe Village Center, at 5522 Elevator Road near Clayton Circle, where Sabroso's used to be.
Jacob Link of Roscoe, IL earned Dean's List honors during the Fall 2023 semester at Lee University. Jacob graduated from Hononegah Community High School in May 2020 and wants to be a high school English teacher. Lee University is a private, Christian university in Cleveland, Tennessee, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Dean's List recognition is earned by full-time, undergraduate students with a semester grade point average between 3.7 and 4.00.
