K9 ZORO, Beloved Winnebago County Sheriff’s K9, Dies After Sudden Illness
K9 ZORO served from September 24, 2021 to August 24, 2026
The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is saddened to announce the passing of K9 ZORO on August 24, 2026.
ZORO began experiencing sudden medical issues and was immediately transported to an area veterinary clinic for evaluation. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison for additional care, where veterinarians determined that he was suffering from an advanced and terminal form of lymphoma.
After consultation with veterinary specialists and consideration of ZORO’s condition, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him. ZORO was surrounded by his fellow deputies and his handler and partner, Senior Deputy DeVore.
K9 ZORO served with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office from September 24, 2021, until his End of Watch on August 24, 2026.
Throughout his career, ZORO faithfully served alongside Senior Deputy DeVore, protecting our deputies and the citizens of Winnebago County. Zoro was more than a law enforcement K9. He was a partner, a protector, and a valued member of our Sheriff’s Office family.
“Losing ZORO is heartbreaking for all of us,” said Sheriff Gary Caruana. “Our K9s are members of our law enforcement family. They serve alongside our deputies and corrections officers, protect our community, and form bonds with their handlers that are difficult to put into words. ZORO gave us his best every day, and we are incredibly grateful for his service and sacrifice.”
Sheriff Caruana added, “Our thoughts are especially with Senior Deputy DeVore and his family during this incredibly difficult time. We know how deeply they loved and cared for ZORO, and we will never forget the contribution he made to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.”
The Sheriff’s Office is grateful to the veterinary professionals who cared for ZORO and made every effort to provide him with the best possible care.
ZORO’s service, loyalty, and dedication to our community will not be forgotten. Neither will the bond he shared with Senior Deputy DeVore and the men and women who had the privilege of serving alongside him.
