A weeks-long investigation into a series of overnight vehicle burglaries has led to the arrest of a juvenile suspect and the recovery of stolen property, according to the Rockton Police Department.

Rockton police announced Monday that officers had been investigating multiple reports of burglaries to motor vehicles and criminal trespass to vehicles beginning on October 26, 2026. The incidents shared a common theme: an unknown individual allegedly targeting vehicles that had been left unlocked during the overnight hours.

Despite increased patrols and focused enforcement efforts in areas affected by the crimes, police initially were unable to locate the suspect. That changed in the early morning hours of November 2, when officers utilized thermal imaging technology to track a suspicious individual near the Wingate Subdivision.

According to the department, officers spotted the subject at approximately 2:41 a.m. with the assistance of thermal vision equipment. Investigators said the individual appeared to be wearing clothing matching descriptions and surveillance images collected from multiple victims throughout the investigation.

Thermal vision, sometimes referred to as thermal imaging or thermography, detects temperature differences in the environment and can assist officers searching for individuals in darkness or concealed locations.

Recognizing the opportunity to apprehend the suspect, Rockton officers coordinated positions around the area to prevent an escape. The operation received additional support from the South Beloit Police Department, which deployed a drone to assist with surveillance from the air.

Police said the drone captured the individual allegedly attempting to open the door of a vehicle while officers monitored movements from both the ground and air.

The suspect was detained a short time later and investigators subsequently determined the individual was a juvenile.

Following the investigation, authorities charged the juvenile with:

  • 10 counts of Burglary to a Motor Vehicle
  • 2 counts of Criminal Trespass to a Motor Vehicle

The juvenile was transported to and lodged at the Winnebago County Juvenile Detention Center.

Police also reported recovering a substantial amount of property believed to have been taken during the incidents. The recovered items have since been returned to their rightful owners in accordance with departmental procedures.

The arrest brings closure to a case that had generated concern among residents in several neighborhoods. Vehicle burglary cases frequently involve offenders searching for unlocked vehicles, often looking for cash, electronics, wallets and other valuables left inside.

In conjunction with the announcement, Rockton police reminded residents to take simple precautions to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim. Officers encourage motorists to lock vehicle doors, remove valuables from sight and report suspicious activity when observed.

"Car burglars don't want to draw attention," the department noted in its release. "They check for unlocked cars."

As with all criminal cases, the charges filed against the juvenile are allegations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
