Indians lose the home opener in NIC 10 boys basketball action Friday night
Isaiah Houi dropped 16 points into the basket but the Hononegah Indians came up short against Guilford.
The Hononegah boys basketball team dropped their conference season opener to Guilford 71-51 at home.
The Indians came into the NIC 10 game 2-2 on Friday night, Dec. 1, 2023. A back-and-forth first half turned into a comfortable victory for the visiting Guilford Vikings. Guilford are the defending conference champs who return a deep and talented team.
A late 1st quarter run by Guilford gave them a 4-point lead after the first. In the 2nd quarter, when Guilford took out all-conference performer Malachi Johnson, it looked as though the Indians might be able to get back into the game. However, a 19-12 2nd quarter was a hole too big for the Indians to dig out of on this night.
Senior Isaiah Houi led the Indians in scoring, dropping in 16 followed by Cole Warren with 11. And doing some great work tonight, senior forward Lucas Touvannas had 10 points while coming off the bench. As Coach Tom Schmidt remarked in my post-game interview, the work and effort Lucas gave will earn him some more playing time and show his teammates the way to compete once they hit the floor.
Next up for the Indians is a battle against NIC 10 foe Freeport on Wednesday night, December 6th at 6:30 p.m. The Pretzels will come into the game winless on the season and would love nothing more than to change that at Hononegah's expense. So grab dinner and head on over to the Hononegah campus for the second home game of the season for the boys varsity basketball team.
