Hononegah students recognized for biliteracy

Almost 20 students in the class of 2021 at Hononegah Community High School qualifed for the Seal of Biliteracy or the Commendation towards Biliteracy, according to the school's World Languages Department.

This national movement recognizes high school students who are skilled in a world language besides English, whether they learned that  language in school or at home. Native or heritage languages also count, as long as the student can demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

The Seal of Biliteracy is granted by the Illinois State Board of Education to students who demonstrate a high level of proficiency in English and one or more other languages.

The Commendation towards Biliteracy is awarded to students who demonstrated intermediate proficiency in English and another language.

This proficiency was measured by performances on an AP Language exam or its equivalent. Hononegah Community High School had 9 students earn the Seal, and 10 students earn the Commendation towards Biliteracy. Each recognition comes with a seal which may be placed on the student's diploma.

The Seal of Biliteracy builds upon the rich linguistic and cultural assets of the district and community, providing students with the necessary skills to be successful in college, career, and life.
