Hononegah Punches Ticket to the Regional Final, Shuts Out Jefferson 13–0 at McHenry
On a cold Monday evening with the postseason pressure rising, Hononegah delivered the kind of defensive masterpiece that has defined their fall — a 13–0 shutout of Jefferson in the IHSA Girls Flag Football Regional Semifinal. It was physical, disciplined, and exactly the brand of football Head Coach Jason Brunke has preached since August.
And once again, the stars of this young but battle‑tested roster rose to the moment.

Demke Takes Over on the Ground
Quarterback Layla Demke put the offense on her shoulders, grinding out 18 carries for 86 yards and two touchdowns, powering Hononegah through a defensive slugfest where every yard mattered. Her legs were the difference, especially in the second half when Jefferson’s defense began to wear down.
Demke also added 79 passing yards on a 7‑for‑18 night, including a one‑point conversion strike to sophomore wideout Claire VanSchelven.
Emma Heidenreich chipped in three carries for six tough yards, while sophomore Harper Vanderheyden added 16 yards on four carries, continuing her role as Hononegah’s reliable change‑of‑pace back.
Receivers Make Timely Plays
Hononegah’s passing game wasn’t explosive, but it was timely.
- Mikayla Mowers hauled in a key 18‑yard catch to spark a second‑quarter scoring drive.
- Claire VanSchelven led the receiving corps with four catches for 47 yards plus the one‑point conversion.
- Irelyn O’Brien added a nine‑yard reception.
- Harper Vanderheyden contributed a five‑yard grab out of the backfield.
Every completion mattered in a game where Jefferson’s defense forced Hononegah to earn every inch.
Defense Dominates — Again
If there’s a calling card for this team, it’s defense. And Monday night, they were suffocating.
Senior linebacker Addison Beilfuss set the tone with two tackles, while freshman Taitum Cates delivered one of the best defensive performances of the postseason: 1.5 tackles and three sacks, blowing up Jefferson’s backfield repeatedly.
Alexandria Huber added 2.5 tackles and a sack, while Karla Krause contributed a tackle and a pass breakup.
But the biggest defensive storyline belonged to the secondary.
- Harper Vanderheyden was everywhere — 8 tackles, a sack, and a pass breakup.
- Claire VanSchelven added 4 tackles, a PBU, and a 16‑yard interception return.
- Amaya Waters sealed the win with a 14‑yard interception return, continuing her late‑season surge.
Hononegah has now posted three straight shutouts, outscoring opponents 100–0 over that span.
