It was a tale of two halves in the Fieldhouse as the game between Harlem and Hononegah was 26-23, with Hononegah only up by three.

Wednesday February 4th, the Hononegah Indians and the Harlem Huskies squared off in their second matchup of the year.

The first half saw some offensive rhythm with senior guard Jay Gilbertson hitting a pair of threes to take a 10-3 lead.

Coach Tom Schmidt credited Gilbertson, saying, “He does a good job spreading the floor and giving us some good spacing.”

That spacing proved key: not only were the nine threes taken by Hononegah impressive, but the 15 2-point shots they created lanes for were also crucial to their attack.

Harlem also found some shooting rhythm with senior guard Mateo Perera, hitting two big threes and dicing Hononegah off the dribble.

The second half saw Hononegah really come into their own offensively with senior guard Oba Fasalojo scoring in the paint and beyond the arc. Fasalojo led Hononegah with 22 points with four attempts at the line.

Perera led for Harlem with 24 points in a good shooting night for the shifty guard who is making a mark in the Harlem history books.

Hononegah often swarmed three players to the ball on defense in an effort to stop Perera’s lethal shooting, which often led to long possessions scanning for an open man in a corner.

The Indians clearly came into this one with defense and rebounding in mind coming off a game against Guilford where they got outmatched by the Viking’s physicality and size.

Friday February 6th they move onto a back-to-back home game against Belvidere where they will try to keep up the momentum and continue to compete for the top spot in the NIC-10.
