Hononegah Claims the Sectional Championship, Outlasts Crystal Lake Central 13–7 — State Quarterfinal Bound
Been an incredible run, built on grit, depth, and a defense that refuses to blink.
On a night when every inch mattered and every heartbeat felt louder than the last, Hononegah delivered the kind of postseason performance that defines a championship team — tough, disciplined, and unshakably resilient. Their 13–7 win over Crystal Lake Central in Tuesday’s Sectional Championship wasn’t just a victory. It was a statement.
Head Coach Jason Brunke didn’t mince words, summing up the moment with the clarity of a man watching his team rise to its potential:
“Been an incredible run.”
And it has been — a run built on grit, depth, and a defense that refuses to blink.

Demke Steadies the Offense
Quarterback Layla Demke once again proved why she’s the heartbeat of Hononegah’s offense. She finished 8-for-18 for 86 yards, tossing a touchdown and adding a one‑point conversion. Her legs were just as vital, grinding out 86 rushing yards on 13 carries, repeatedly extending drives and controlling the tempo.
Emma Heidenreich provided the game’s most important punch, powering in a 15‑yard touchdown run that gave Hononegah the lead they would never surrender. Harper Vanderheyden added two carries for five yards, helping keep the defense honest.
Claire VanSchelven added a perfect 1-for-1 passing line for 33 yards, a timely wrinkle that caught Crystal Lake Central off balance.
Receivers Deliver in the Clutch
Hononegah’s receiving corps didn’t overwhelm with volume — they overwhelmed with impact.
- Amaya Waters: 3 catches, 15 yards
- Claire VanSchelven: 1 catch, 26 yards
- Alexis Eich: 1 catch, 2 yards and the one‑point conversion
- Mikayla Mowers: 3 catches, 43 yards and a touchdown
Mowers’ score was vintage Hononegah postseason football — crisp route, strong hands, and a quarterback trusting her playmaker in the biggest moment.
Defense Wins Championships — And This One Was Earned
Crystal Lake Central came in with speed and confidence. They left with frustration.
Hononegah’s defense — fast, physical, and increasingly feared — authored another masterpiece.
- Addison Beilfuss: 9 tackles
- Taitum Cates: 3 tackles, 3 sacks
- Makiya Harshbarger: 1 tackle
- Alexandria Huber: 1.5 tackles, PBU
- Karla Krause: 2 tackles, INT returned 3 yards
- Harper Vanderheyden: 6 tackles, PBU
- Claire VanSchelven: 4.5 tackles, PBU
- Amaya Waters: 2 tackles, 2 interceptions for 14 yards
Waters’ two picks were game‑changing — one halting a potential tying drive, the other sealing the championship.
Cates’ relentless pressure was the engine of the defensive front, collapsing pockets and forcing hurried throws. Beilfuss, as she has all season, anchored the unit with poise and physicality.
