The Hononegah varsity girls basketball is 25-3 (16-0), led by great senior leadership, an outstanding team defense and a highly competitive group of players.

Bre Carter and Emma Clark were named to the All-Tournament Team at the Dundee-Crown Christmas Tournament.

The Hononegah boys varsity basketball team continues to work hard and improve everyday. They won their game against Freeport, 77-63, on Friday, Jan. 27, 2023.

Cole Warren was nominated for athlete of the week by the Rockford Register-Star for his performance in the Crystal Lake Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

Athletic director Steve Cofoid said at the Jan. 18 school board meeting, “The boys bowling team has had a very successful season thus far - four tournament wins - with a couple 2nd and 3rd place finishes when we were just not as sharp as we needed to be,” adding, “We have another large squad this year with over 30 student athletes.” The team eventually won 6th place at the state tournament, averaging 206.1 points per game.

Cofoid commended the bowling coaching staff, especially Dennis Mowry who he calls “an indispensable asset to the team who welcomes everyone willing to be committed to the team and work hard on the lanes and in the classroom.”

The boys bowling team has set numerous state and national records: two IHSA state championships, two IHSA state runner up trophies, multiple conference championships, regional, sectionals and over 30 invitational tournament wins. They participated in the Guilford invitational on Nov. 19 at Don Carter Lanes.

Girls bowling had another great season. At the Dixon invite, the varsity team placed 2nd with a score of 5868. Coach Jeremy Woody reports, "Cassidy Davenport won individually with 1313, Madison Davenport 5th 1186, and Emilee Mullranin 8th." The JV team won the Belvidere invite at the Cherry Bowl. The team score was 3888. Kailyn Davis came in 2nd, with a high game of 195 and a 1st place series score of 1015. Haylie Howe placed 4th, with a high game of 180 and 5th place high series of 883. "Haylie also had a personal high game," adds Woody.

The HCHS varsity cheerleading team placed 1st in their first competition. The JV team qualified for JV ICCA state. In their second competition, JV and Varsity both placed 3rd. Next, JV finished 2nd out of 11 teams and Varsity finished 6th out of 20. In their fourth competition, JV got 1st and Varsity got 4th.

At varsity sectionals at Belvidere North on Jan. 28, Hononegah placed 8th, less than six point short of going to IHSA state.

Dance has qualified two routines and two soloists for state in the IDTA State meet in February. They hosted the NIC 10 conference tournament on Jan. 12 and another home competition on Feb. 4.

The Hononegah boys swim team completed their regular season of conference dual meets undefeated, setting up strong performances heading in the final weeks of invites and the post season conference/sectional championships. They won a 13th consecutive conference title and state qualifications at the sectional meet in both diving and swimming events.

The wrestling team was undefeated in NIC-10 regular season conference action. They hosted Harlem on Thursday Jan. 19, 2023 and finally placed 2nd to Belvidere Co-Op at the NIC-10 championships on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2023 at Harlem High School.

At the board meeting, Cofoid reviewed state series dates and locations in regional, sectional and state divisions for each qualifying sport.

And in other competition, he reported that the Robotics Club had their first Robotics kick off of the year on Jan. 7, opening doors to great creativity in the future.
