Wisconsin's Dugout Canoe Conundrum, Wed July 16, 2025, 5 - 7 p.m., Nature At The Confluence, 306 Dickop St, South Beloit, IL 61080

Recently, the Wisconsin’s State Historical Society made a significant discovery of a 1,200-year-old dugout canoe on Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin. Many additional questions came along with the dugout canoe discovery: how and why it had been discovered in that location of the lake.

At a July 16, 2026 event hosted by Nature At The Confluence, Bill Quackenbush, who serves as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and Amy Rosebrough, Wisconsin State Archaeologist, will discuss how the Ho-Chunk and other Tribes reacted to this discovery and how they became a factor with its use as an educational opportunity within their tribal communities and the public.

A dugout canoe will be present for participants to touch. If weather permits, the canoe will be placed in Turtle Creek and some participants will have an opportunity for a brief paddle. This program is welcome to all and the intended audience is ages 10 and up. Registration is $5/person and can be paid in person in cash or online at natureattheconfluence.com.
