The winter high school sports season is winding down but the Hononegah Indians have lots of hardware going into the championship trophy case.

The Hononegah girls basketball team won the regional title at Rockford Auburn over host Rockford Auburn 43-34 last Thursday night, Feb. 15, 2024. They now play 19-13 Lake Zurich, who finished third in the North Suburban conference, for a chance to play in the sectional final on Tuesday night February 20, 2024 against the winner of Libertyville and Guilford. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. from McHenry.

The Hononegah girls bowling team finished 7th at the recently completed IHSA State Bowling tournament from The Cherry Bowl in Cherry Valley, IL. The Indians were led by junior Emilee Mullranin who rolled 2,502 in six games, finishing 12th overall as an individual bowler. The other three bowlers on the team who competed were senior Cassidy Davenport 2,446 (12th  overall), junior Kailyn Davis 2,301 (44th overall) and freshman Riley Flaningam 2,127 (73rd overall).

Last weekend, the Hononegah boys wrestlers competed at the individual state finals from
State Farm Center in Champaign. Here are the results for Hononegah wrestlers at state:

  • 3A 106 lb – Freshman Rocco Cassioppi 2ndplace. Dropping the final 6-5 to Caleb Noble from Warren.
  • 3A 113 lb – Freshman Bruno Cassioppi 3rdplace. Winning the 3rd place match 10-0 major decision over Maddox Garbis of Plainfield.
  • 3A 132 lb Senior Thomas Ayden Silva  2nd place. Dropping the final on technical fall 20-5.
  • 3A 138 lb Sophomore Robbie Darling lost to Luke Siwinski from Lincoln-Way West 5-0 in the opening round.
  • 3A 150 lb Junior Max Haskinslost to Liam Kelly of Mount Carmel 5-1 in the opening round.
  • 3A 157 lb Freshman Brody Sendale 3rdplace. Winning the 3rd place match 9-2 over Noah Quintana of West Aurora.
  • 3A 165 lb Junior Connor Diemel lost in the 2nd round 13-2 by major decision to Royce Lopez of Warren.
  • 3A 175 lb Junior Kurt Smith lost to Sedeeq Al Obaidi of W. Warrenville South in the 2nd round.

The wrestling team will now start the march for the team title on Tuesday night at home against Hersey. Hononegah is hosting the sectional which also has Mt. Prospect and Libertyville.
