Golfer's Day April 10th - Its a day for duffer's and professionals to enjoy playing and celebrating golf.
Did you know that April 10 is Golfer’s Day? Well National Golfer’s Day was founded to celebrate the love of golf. It takes place on this date as a nod to the founding of the Professional Golf Association (PGA), which took place on April 10, 1916.
Golfer’s Day is a celebration, not of the game itself, but the men and women who play it, even the lowliest duffer (Like Me) who shanks their ball all the way into the forest.
Clearly, the best way to celebrate is to hit the links yourself, but that may not always be an option for us.
Recently, most of our courses have started to open for the 2026 season. Here’s a quick look at each course in the area.
First up is Ledges Golf Course 7111 McCurry Road in Roscoe.
Since 1966, this 18 hole course has been a challenging course that will test every club in your bag from driver to putter. Don’t forget to get to the course early and warm up for the water hazards and sand traps that you will need to navigate around this tree lined course. Ledges Golf Course is open everyday that the weather allows. Sign up for your tee times HERE>
Mark your dates for the Hononegah Booster Club Golf Outing on Friday, July 17 2026. Sponsorships are also available if you or a business wants to support the booster club golf outing. Email [email protected]
The second course we look at is a very historic area in our community. Macktown Golf Course opened in 1931. This 18 hole course demands accuracy with every shot, lose your way or focus and you could see your score blow up quickly. Mature trees on Macktown give you the feel of walking in the woods while playing golf. It's a fair test of your nerves if you can stay on the short grass and out of the rough. Expect to buy some and bring extra balls as its encouraged. We aren’t professionals and will most likely lose a couple in the woods along the way. Macktown Golf Course also has a practice area to get prepared for your round of tight fairways and normally speedy greens. Sign up for your tee times HERE>
Our third course is Atwood Homestead. I swear every time I visit this course I run into turkeys, a whole family of them. Which honestly I love as it reminds me we are in nature and I need to enjoy being outside no matter how bad I am playing.
Opening in 1971, Atwood has a beautiful clubhouse, pro shop and practice area. I’ve seen some of the best sunsets while playing golf at Atwood. Some of my playing partners may have said that sunset was actually my golf game. Located technically in Rockford at 8990 Old River Road the Par 72 course can be played many ways. If your a longer hitter you will enjoy the more open parts of the course while if you hit it a bit shorter Atwood gives you a chance at making a good scores as they have four Par 3s spread throughout the course. With Atwood playing the longest at over seventy-two hundred yards its also the most open course of the 3 we have looked at so far. Get your tee times HERE>
The final course we will look at is Red Barn Golf Course. Red Barn is a 9-hole family friendly golf course that is great for the beginning golfer and those who would like to challenge themselves with different types of shots and strategy. From the opening hole which can play from 120 to 100 yards it gives you options to play it high or bump and run it on to the open front.
The wonderful thing about Red Barn is that every time you play the course it could be played a different way. Each hole gives you options to attack the course. Be aggressive and take chances or play it safe and score low numbers. Either way its a fun 1.5 hours. While at the course don’t forget about their Top Tracer bays. Use it to warm up or bring the family out to have fun on a spring/summer day. Red Barn also has a fully functional practice area with 2 putting greens, bunkers and a pitching area.
If you can't make it out to a course on April 10 2026 a great way to celebrate is walk up behind friends or co workers and pretend to narrate their actions as if you were a golf announcer. While your laughing grab an Arnold Palmer, a drink made of half lemonade and half iced tea made famous by the golfer of the same name.
Have a great Golfer's Day and golfing season. Share all your great golfing pictures with us on our Facebook page.
