Strong spirits: truth!

The other morning in the locker room of the Y, a friend relayed to me a question his father had asked: "Why are we here?" That is, on the earth. My friend said his answer was, to serve others. I agreed, and added, to bring honor and glory to God by our lives.

In a world that is often overwhelmed with evil, in which we are often beset with so many lies, what can we rely on? What can we count on? The Bible tells us we can rely on love, and on God himself, as revealed in the person of Jesus.

"Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth." Paul the apostle (1 Corinthians 13:6)

"God is Love." John the apostle (1 John 4:8)

"I am the way, and the truth and the life." Jesus (John 14:6)

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Paul again (Romans 12:21)

If God is in us, we need not fear evil. Jesus promises he is the truth and will guide us into all truth. We'll know the difference between truth and lies. This does not happen because we try harder, but because we yield fully to him. When we do, we are filled with his love.
