Weather didn't dampen the desire and grit of the Hononegah girls rugby team

Sunday, April 28, 2024 was a wet, windy, and cold day weather-wise on Kelsey Field on the Hononegah High School campus. However, Sunday morning saw the Hononegah girls rugby team play a very competitive game against the visiting Taft squad. Walking off the bus, Taft looked quite a bit bigger than Hononegah. In the first half, Taft was able to use its size advantage and push around the smaller, quicker Hononegah team.

After halftime, Hononegah was able to find its footing and get a couple of scores on the board to gain some confidence heading into the home stretch of the 2024 schedule.

Coach Lassen Fleege said, “I loved seeing big charging runs, but I think Riley Oyston made the biggest change with her kicks, pushing the other team back into their half during our 2nd half push.”

The Hononegah girls rugby team will finish its 2024 regular season with away games on May 4 and May 11. On May 4 they travel to Morton and on May 11 they travel to Lincoln-Way North High School and tangle with the Cobras Motley team. To finish the season May 18 & May 19: The Hononegah girls rugby team has a chance to compete in the US Nationals at Wisconsin Rugby Complex, which is at 448 Clark St., Cottage Grove, WI 53527.

Cost for the event is as follows:

  • Daily Pass - $7
  • Weekend Pass - $12
